Laptop batteries become weaker with time. A laptop that once worked for five hours may only last two or three hours after years of use.
The easiest way to check laptop battery health in Windows 10 or Windows 11 is to create a Windows Battery Report. Open Command Prompt, type powercfg /batteryreport, and press Enter.
The report shows how much power your battery could hold when new and how much it can hold now. It is a useful estimate, but it is not a complete diagnosis of every battery problem.
Quick answer: compare Design Capacity with Full Charge Capacity in the report.
Full Charge Capacity ÷ Design Capacity × 100 gives you an easy estimate of the battery’s current capacity compared with when it was new.
How to Check Laptop Battery Health in Windows 11 and 10
Windows has a built-in battery-report tool. You do not need to install extra software. The laptop battery must be detected by Windows for the report to contain useful battery data.
1. Open Command Prompt
Click the Start button and search for Command Prompt or CMD. For the smoothest result, right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
2. Enter the Battery Health Command
Type this command and press Enter:
powercfg /batteryreport
Windows creates a battery report and shows you where the file was saved.
3. Open the Battery Report
Look at the file location shown in Command Prompt. Open that location and find battery-report.html. Open the file in your web browser.
4. Find the Installed Batteries Section
Scroll down until you see Installed batteries. The two most important numbers are:
- Design Capacity
- Full Charge Capacity
These numbers help you understand the current health of your laptop battery. Microsoft confirms that powercfg /batteryreport creates an HTML battery report and displays its saved location in Command Prompt. Read Microsoft’s official guidance.
What Is Design Capacity?
Design Capacity is the amount of power your battery was designed to hold when it was new.
For example, your battery may have a Design Capacity of 50,000 mWh. This number is the original reference point for the battery.
What Is Full Charge Capacity?
Full Charge Capacity shows how much power your battery can hold now when fully charged.
For example, a battery that started at 50,000 mWh may now only hold 40,000 mWh. The bigger the difference between Design Capacity and Full Charge Capacity, the more capacity the battery has lost.
How to Check Laptop Battery Health in Percentage
Windows Battery Report gives you the numbers needed to estimate battery health percentage.
Battery Health = Full Charge Capacity ÷ Design Capacity × 100
Example:
- Design Capacity: 50,000 mWh
- Full Charge Capacity: 40,000 mWh
40,000 ÷ 50,000 × 100 = 80%
Your battery can now hold about 80% of the power it could hold when it was new.
What Is a Good Laptop Battery Health Percentage?
A battery close to its original capacity has less wear. A lower percentage means it has lost more capacity.
| Battery Health | What It Means |
|---|---|
| 90–100% | Very little capacity loss |
| 80–89% | Some normal wear |
| 70–79% | Noticeable capacity loss |
| Below 70% | Much lower capacity than when new |
These numbers are only a practical guide. A battery at 75% does not always need replacement. If it still gives enough working time and charges normally, you may continue using it.
What Else Can You See in a Windows Battery Report?
The Windows Battery Report contains more than just battery capacity.
Cycle Count
A battery cycle is counted when you use a total amount equal to 100% of the battery’s capacity over time. A higher cycle count usually means the battery has been used more. Some laptops may not show a cycle count in the Windows report.
Recent Usage
This section shows recent battery and charging activity. It can help you see when the laptop was running on battery or connected to power.
Battery Capacity History
This shows how Full Charge Capacity has changed over time. It can help you see whether your battery is gradually losing capacity.
Battery Life Estimates
This section gives an estimate of how long your laptop may work on battery. It is only an estimate: screen brightness, apps, games, Wi-Fi and other settings can change actual battery time.
Battery Health vs Battery Life: What’s the Difference?
Battery health tells you how much power the battery can still hold compared with when it was new.
Battery life tells you how long the laptop works after charging.
They are not the same thing. A battery may have good health, but gaming or high screen brightness can still make it run out quickly.
How to Check Battery Health on Dell, HP, Lenovo and ASUS Laptops
How to Check Battery Health on a Dell Laptop
Use the same Windows command: powercfg /batteryreport. Dell laptops can also show battery health in BIOS: restart the laptop, repeatedly press F2 at the Dell logo, and look in the battery section. On many older Dell models, it appears under General → Battery Information.
Dell may show a condition such as Excellent, Good, Fair or Poor. Use the Windows report or Dell’s own diagnostics instead of downloading random “Dell battery health check” software. Dell’s official battery-health guide lists BIOS and diagnostic options.
How to Check Battery Health on an HP Laptop
HP laptop users can use powercfg /batteryreport as well. HP also provides battery testing through HP PC Hardware Diagnostics on supported machines.
If you only want the current capacity estimate, the Windows Battery Report is the simplest place to start.
How to Check Battery Health on a Lenovo Laptop
For Lenovo laptops, use the same Windows Battery Report method. Some Lenovo models also offer battery information or testing in Lenovo-supported software. Compare Design Capacity with Full Charge Capacity to see how much capacity the battery has lost.
How to Check Battery Health on an ASUS Laptop
ASUS users can also run powercfg /batteryreport. On supported laptops, the MyASUS app includes a battery diagnosis option in System Diagnosis. ASUS explains the supported MyASUS battery check.
For a quick capacity check, the Windows Battery Report works without installing another program.
Can You Check Laptop Battery Health Online?
A normal website cannot fully check your laptop battery health just by opening the website. A website does not have the detailed battery data needed to calculate capacity health.
Use Windows Battery Report or an official tool from Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS or your laptop maker. Be careful with unknown websites asking you to download “battery health check” software.
Signs Your Laptop Battery May Be Getting Weak
Your battery may be getting weak if:
- Battery runs out much faster than before
- Battery percentage drops very quickly
- Laptop suddenly turns off
- Laptop does not charge properly
- Full Charge Capacity is much lower than Design Capacity
- Battery becomes swollen
Some capacity loss over time is normal. However, a swollen battery needs immediate attention. Stop using the laptop, disconnect power, do not press, bend or puncture the battery, and arrange safe professional service. Dell’s safety guidance also advises immediate action for swollen batteries.
When Should You Replace a Laptop Battery?
You may need a new battery when the old one no longer gives enough working time or starts causing problems.
Consider replacement if:
- Battery time has become very short
- Laptop turns off without warning
- Battery does not charge correctly
- Battery health has dropped a lot
- Your laptop reports poor battery health
- Battery is swollen
Do not replace a battery based only on one percentage. Look at its health, battery time, age and any charging problems together.
How to Keep Your Laptop Battery Healthy
You cannot stop battery wear completely, but good use can help:
- Keep the laptop away from too much heat.
- Use the correct charger.
- Keep Windows and laptop drivers updated.
- Use battery charge limits if your laptop supports them.
- Do not block the laptop’s air vents.
Heat is especially important because high temperatures can make batteries wear faster.
